ASRF Outstanding Humanitarian Award

THE ASRF OUTSTANDING HUMANITARIAN AWARD

The ASRF Standing Committee shall select the honoree for this award in accordance with the stipulated guidelines. The award will be given to an individual who has made outstanding humanitarian contributions to Africa in a manner that honors  the best principles and ethics of humanitarianism. The winning candidate will be presented with a plaque.

1. Eligibility: The nominees for the award may be members or non-members of the African Studies and Research Forum (ASRF).

2. Evidence: The standards for selecting the recipient or recipients of the award shall be based on the following:

OUTSTANDING HUMANITARIAN CONTRIBUTIONS TO AFRICA

a) Critical contribution(s) made to the provision and use of valuable books and other instructional materials in academic institutions in Africa either singularly or as part of a collective effort.

b) The establishment of scholarship programs, mentoring  and advocacy support, or sustained financial contributions made to help support the education of students and scholars in Africa or African students  and scholars studying in the United States or elsewhere outside of Africa.

c) The design and implementation of critical development initiatives or contribution(s) made to a development initiative or project supportive of the dignity and well being of people and communities in Africa, either singularly or as part of a collective effort.  These initiatives could be in a wide range of fields—health, infrastructure, housing, refugee assistance, micro-finance, community rehabilitation, human rights awareness and the protection of vulnerable individuals including women and children etc.

Time Frame: Assessment of a nominee’s humanitarian contributions to Africa must be based on the previous two years prior to the nomination.

3. The Nomination Process: Members of the African Studies and Research Forum (ASRF) may either nominate themselves or other deserving individuals for the award.

4. The Selection of the Recipient or Recipients: After reviewing the nominations for the award, the Standing Committee on Awards will choose the recipient or recipients. Thereafter, the list of the recipient or recipients shall be submitted to the President of the ASRF.
