Dear ASRF family,
I am deeply saddened to share with you the news of the sudden death of our dear sister, Dr Evelyn Denise Odunsi. Evelyn Denise Odunsi (“Sandy”), 58, was the beloved wife of our colleague and friend, Dr Bennett Odunsi and proud mother of their three children—Benetta, Abosede and Ayokunle. A dedicated member of St Peter’s African Methodist and Episcopal Church, she was called home to be with the Lord on Thursday, September 27, 2012.
Dr. Odunsi was a compassionate obstetrician and gynecologist who always endeavored to provide the very best level of care to each and every one of her patients at her private practice, the Decatur Memorial Hospital (DMH), and at St. Mary’s Hospital. In many moving testimonials, her patients have esteemed her not just as their doctor, but also a treasured friend and mentor.
Family and friends all over the world have also shared similar remembrances of Evelyn as a true servant, who loved to entertain, laugh and fellowship with friends and family, working always in love, humility, compassion, generosity and service. She leaves to mourn her dedicated husband of 39 years, Dr. Bennett Odunsi, two daughters Benetta Robinson (Arlington), and Abosede, a son, Ayokunle, mother, Isadora Crayton, a sister, Sonya Crayton, brother, Jason (Saran) Crayton and a host of nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, cousins, and several friends who loved and adored her.
The funeral services were held on Saturday October 6, 2012 at Maranatha Assembly of God, Decatur, Illinois 62521 and she was laid to rest on Monday, October 8, 2012 at Oak Woods Cemetery in Chicago. After learning of this sad news from Prof Ike Uodgu, the ASRF family has communicated our condolences to our dear brother Bennett Odunsi and we encourage members to call or write directly to Dr Odunsi to encourage and support him in this devastating loss. We would also like to send a gift to support the family at this time. If you would like to make a monetary contribution, please send a check (with Odunsi written in the memo line) to: The ASRF treasurer, Dr Christine Mathenge, Department of Geosciences, Austin Peay State University, P.O. Box 4418, Clarksville, TN 37044.
May Evelyn’s lovely soul rest in perfect peace and may her family be comforted in their memories of the blessed years she shared with them.
Warm regards,
Peyi Soyinka-Airewele
ASRF President
